Hinduism has three epics: the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, and the Brahmasutras. The Gita itself contains information on the significance of the final two. Because of this, the Gita can be compared to an expressway and the rest of the scriptures as a road. It is both a mantra and a shraddha-sutra because it is a conversation between Lord Krishna and himself.
